What was I waiting for? I was waiting for the stars to align, for every detail to be in place, to have all the answers, to know how it would come out, to feel comfortable...etc., etc. etc.! In other words, I was waiting until everything was perfect before I would take a step.

Well, it turns out that being comfortable is overrated. Yes, there are times when nothing beats snuggling into a warm bed with a good book or knowing just what is going to happen next, but staying in your comfort zone locks out the thrill of discovery, the excitement of a new experience and the exhilaration of growth. Where in life would you like to go, but so far your comfort zone has held you captive? What idea do want to develop, goal do you want to reach, or change would you like to make that you just aren’t doing anything about? If you want to break the bonds of your comfort zone, consider these simple activities:

Get inspired. Why do you want to do this thing? Why is it important to you? Imagine what the future will look like when you produce the results you want.

Share your vision. The people in your life want you to be happy, healthy and successful. The more you share what you want to create with them, the more people there are to hold your vision, and the more resources naturally come your way.

Change your focus. A tiny internal shift of even a few degrees can make a huge difference in your life. For example, shifting your attention from concern for your own comfort to what could be realized in your life, your business or even the world can mean the difference between inaction and action.

Lower your risk. You don’t have to go it alone. Invest in yourself and hire a coach, or work with a mentor to help you solidify your goals and create strategies for accomplishing them, who will act as a sounding board and challenge you to do more than you might be doing on your own.

Take a baby step. The first step is the hardest, and the most powerful because it generates confidence and creates the momentum you need to keep you moving forward. Read a book, do some research, interview someone who has already done what you want to do, take a class, make a phone call, write a letter, do something, anything, that will move you forward. Then, celebrate your success and take another step, and then another…

Reduce your stress. It is a fine line between fear and exhilaration or excitement, and when stress levels build that line can become indistinguishable. When stress levels are high, your system becomes overloaded and you can become hypersensitive to discomfort of any kind, causing you to pull back from even those activities you enjoy. Take a yoga or meditation class, plan some down time, prioritize life based on what is most important to you, or create some other way to relax and get some perspective. Stress reduction can be learned, and if you can’t do it on your own, get some help.

These words inspire me to keep stepping outside my comfort zone, and go for it:

"You can't get it wrong, and you'll never get it done." Abraham Hicks

"Anything worth doing is worth doing badly at first." Attributed to many

"If you wait for every light to be green, you'll never leave your driveway." Unknown

"God can't steer a parked car." Unknown
