We've all heard the old adage, "what you resist persists," and it is true. You can only impact what you can accept. A sure sign you are resisting something is when you are complaining about it. Complaining that a lump of clay is a lump of clay does not make a clay pot. A pot is created by accepting the clay into your hands exactly as it is and exactly as it is not, and then shaping it into your vision.
Let's say that you and I are each eager to get home to our families, and we each have a flat tire. I'm storming around and complaining: "I don't have time for this! ... I can't believe this is happening to me! ... This is a brand new tire! ... How can it be flat? ... Why do things like this always happen to ME! ... What was that moron thinking that put this tire on my car! ... Can you believe this is happening to me?!"
Meanwhile, you have changed your tire, taken the damaged tire in to be repaired and are on your way home to be with your family. Me? I'm still in the process, steaming and slamming things around, and getting more worked up by the minute.
Continuing the scenario, I finally get my tire changed and get home to my family, exhausted and angry from all the trauma and the drama, where I complain loudly and repeatedly about how I didn't have time for that, I can't believe it happened to me, it shouldn't have gone flat, etc., etc., completely altering the environment I was so anxious to get home to.
You arrive home, a little later than ususal, though peaceful. You tell your family that you had a flat tire.
Who had a more peaceful experience, you or me? Who reached their goal faster, you or me? Did my complaining change the fact that I had a flat tire? Absolutely not! The earth spins. It throws mud. Sometimes it gets on you. It is not personal!
Remember, you have the power to accept what is, and create what isn't. When you let go of your resistance to what is and shift your focus to what you do want, more possibilities open up for you, including the possibility of being peaceful and powerful in the face of any circumstance. Give it a try and watch your stress levels go down, and your peace of mind and productivity go up. |
